You guys, I still really cannot believe that we have entered the year 2014. Cue Twilight Zone music because that’s what was playing in my head as I typed that out! I wish I could provide some deep philosophical meaning about time and blah blah, but I’m far from a philosopher so I’ll spare you.
Earlier in December, I decided I would rather take time off after the Christmas week because I knew I wanted to exercise a ton, see a bunch of friends, and ring in the new year with a bit of relaxation.
The fit and fun staycation began on Monday evening with a yoga class. What better way to get into relaxation mode than with yoga.
The rest of the week was quite active. A breakdown:
Tuesday (New Years Eve): Ringing in Hope 10K. I had been eyeing a race in the area for New Years Day but it had sold out before I could register and then I saw that there was a race on New Years Eve. And it had race day registration. And it helped local charities. And it had a 1pm start time. I was so there. It was cold, but not windy. The course was mostly flat. I was moving quickly, but it didn’t feel like I was working hard. And a solid PR!
Following the race, Chris and I attended a New Years Eve party at our friends house. It was so great to be able to ring in 2014 with a wonderful group of people. So much laughter and positivity all around us.
Wednesday (New Years Day): I signed up for a morning (ahem… 11am) class at Revolve for my first ass-kicking workout of the year. It was glorious!
Following the class, Chris and I went to see Saving Mr. Banks at the movie theater which we really enjoyed. The rest of the day was spent visiting with my in-laws and hanging out.
Thursday: I finally was able to meet-up with Allison from Life’s A Bowl. We spent the afternoon chatting (seriously, time flew by!) and laughing. She had to study and I had to get some work done to my car or else we would’ve found ourselves painting some pottery.
Friday: I went for a hilly interval walk on the treadmill in the morning and then lounged with my other lover, Netflix, in the afternoon. The DC area was hit with a little bit of snow and ice Thursday night, so I stuck to my apartment complex gym. Later in the evening, I planned an impromptu girls night with Jennifer and Lindsay. I may have ate my weight in salad, steak and crab cake. It was gluttonous and it was delicious.
Saturday: I was supposed to meet up with a friend for a seven mile run, but the sidewalks in our neighborhoods had yet to meet a shovel and salt. So, rather than scrap the entire workout, we opted for a gym session instead. My legs felt like jelly after forty-five minutes on the elliptical. The rest of the day (and the wee hours of Sunday morning) was spent hanging with the girls.
Sunday: I did a thirty-minute HIIT run on the apartment complex treadmill in the morning.
In the afternoon, Chris and I went to see The Secret Life of Walter Mitty which I enjoyed way more than I thought I would. I had seen a few previews for it but it didn’t pique my interest until I found out that a lot of the movie was filmed in Iceland. I may have cried to Chris during the credits that I want to go back. The rest of the day was spent running errands and meal prepping for the week.
If the rest of 2014 is as fun as this past week, I am truly lucky. If it’s not, at least I have these memories. Haha! No, but really, I think this is a nice indicator of what’s to come this year and I have no complaints.
