I’ve done just a few smaller races since July. (Literally 3.) Rather than write a post about each individually, I’ve decided to do one big post.
First up: Firecracker 5K
I apologize for the major delay in posting about a race that happened on July 4, but what can ya do?
The Firecracker 5k is a HOT race. Obviously, this is to be expected because the DC area is not known for comfortable summers.
The Firecracker 5K is also a HUMID race. Again, the summer here is anything but pleasant.
I don’t really have much to say about the race itself besides it has a few hills (it’s around Reston Town Center and Reston is a very hilly area), lots of water, and good post-race snacks.
July 4th is my runniversary. So, I have a feeling I’ll be enduring quite a few super sweaty races over the next few years to celebrate!
My biggest takeaway — a woman approached me following the race and told me how much I inspired her on the course. She was having a rough go at it and when she saw me take off running it made her do the same. Ahh I couldn’t even handle the sweetness of her comment.
Second: Perfect 10
Shockingly, I didn’t have another race on the calendar until the last weekend in September. And that race was the Perfect 10. Runners got to choose if they wanted to do a 10k or a 10miler. Since I had Crawlin Crab coming up the following weekend, I opted for the 10K.
The perfect weather. Such a pretty course. And a decent medal waiting for me at the finish line. All the good things about running.
And I got to run a lot of it with one of my best friends! We split up around mile 4 so I could potentially get a PR. I remember being very confused about a directional sign toward the end and thought I had a lot further to go than I actually did so I took a walk break when I should’ve kept running. Sadly, no PR was had.
Third: Wicked 10K
I did not do this race for any sort of time goal. After Crawlin Crab, I entered a running rut and just wasn’t feeling it mentally so I took it as a leisurely jog.
Thank goodness I did because the costumes at this race were on point. I passed Scooby Doo and the gang in their awesome mystery machine. A ton of Duck Dynasty guys, one crew even had a canoe. A few bearded mermaids (guys dressed like Ariel) and some scuba divers.
I just threw on a pair of cat ears and called it a day. I knew it was a Halloween themed race but I am always unsure of how much people get into the theme. Now I know to step up my costume game for next time.
The course is pretty standard for Virginia Beach. Flat, run along the boardwalk, great organization, fun perks along the course. I can’t complain. This race had a thriller zone and a zombie zone and candy corn.
why can’t every run be along the beach?
I am growing to like running shorter distances more and more. Who knows, they could become my new favorite.
